I just saw Cooking with Stella. I was interested because of the food aspect, of course, but also because of the Foreign Service aspect, since it reminds me of my roots. The movie started off with great food, then continued on a different tangent. On one hand, that’s a good thing, because I hate when a preview gives away the whole movie; on the other hand, there was less food than I expected. Overall, the movie was ok – not great, but I’m glad I saw it. I love how the official website gives a few of the recipes mentioned in it, though!
Another good movie in theatres right now is Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which you should really see on a big screen (or a big tv). It’s meant to be a sequel to the original Disney movie, but seen through Tim Burton’s eyes, it’s really something! The plot is predictable, even though it doesn’t actually follow the book, but the reinterpretation of the characters is very much worth it.
Coming to DVD is one of the best movies I saw recently: Sherlock Holmes, with Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law. It was AWESOME. Finally, a movie where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes kicks a** and is presented, with all his quirks and skills (unlike some of the other adaptations, where he seemed the perfect gentleman and a strict intellectual tolerating Watson... it’s actually the other way around, even though he is incredibly intelligent). The cast was perfect, and the Engineer and I are going to get the Blu-Ray version.
Also, Fantastic Mr. Fox (it’s not just a kids’ movie, trust me). I loved this in theatres, I really recommend it. The animation was great, as well as the cast, and I just loved the humour.
On a different note, you might also want to see Creation, a movie about the life of Charles Darwin around the time when he was developing his theory about evolution; the Engineer and I both enjoyed that one.
I forgot to mention "The Princess and the Frog" - it's an awesome movie, and I'm thrilled that Disney finally made a good old 2D that was worth seeing.
